On July 19, 2024, the article entitled “Childhood Prevalence, Sex Ratio, and Characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder in Cyprus, Using School Reporting: A Cross-Sectional Study” was published in the research journal Advances in Neurodevelopmental Disorders, by Dr. Margarita Kylili-Lesta, Dr. Konstantinos Giannakou, and Dr. Louiza Voniati.
The study was conducted as part of the doctoral thesis of speech pathologist Margarita Kylili-Lesta, in 2023 with a total sample of 117 schools in Cyprus across all provinces, which included 9990 children aged 5-12. It is the first scientific epidemiological prevalence study for ASD in Cyprus, revealing that 1.8% (1.5-2.1%) of children in the age group had the diagnosis in 2023, i.e. approximately 1170 (975–1365) children, at a sex ratio of 4.1 boys for every girl.
